ARAUCANIAN REGION
The Araucanian region is named for its large quantity of araucaria trees. This region extends from the city of Temuco to that of Valdivia and includes the 9th and 10th regions. The main attractions in this area are nature sites, such as the majestic snow covered mountains (including Villarica), the extensive native forests, and the more than 10 lakes that lay amid the soft valleys. Here live the descendents of the Mapuche indigenous community, the first inhabitants of this territory. As they resisted Spanish conquest, their traditions continue to this day, allowing visitors to appreciate their distinct cultural manifestations, such as beautiful handicrafts and an excellent traditional gastronomy.
The city of Villarica is at the edge of the lake and at the base of the volcano bearing the city’s namesake. On the other side of the lake is Pucon, an important tourist city with a first rate hotel infrastructure. From Pucon, you can visit various nature parks, hot springs, volcanic caves, and ski centers. There are countless activities for those who wish to be in contact with this untouched virgin land. |
